What is a Caricature?
Whether drawn from a photo in the studio or sketched live from a (usually nervous-looking) face at your event, the same artistic principle applies. The word ‘caricature’ originally comes from the Italian ‘caricare’, meaning ‘overload’, and true to that meaning, a caricature should exaggerate, not distort. Distortion alters a face beyond recognition; exaggeration keeps it recognisable while amplifying character. That’s why every Perth caricature I create is ‘hyper-realistic’ — not a cartoon, not a photo, but an exaggeration of reality that captures a person’s true essence.
Two Ways I Create Perth Caricatures
There are two sides to my work as a Perth caricaturist: commissioned caricatures drawn from photos in my Inglewood studio, and live caricatures drawn on the spot for parties and corporate event entertainment. Both disciplines share the same blank-page approach — I never rely on a set formula of interchangeable eyes, noses, or chins. Every caricature starts fresh, with your face.
Commissioned caricatures from photos: Working from your photos in my Perth studio, I sketch, block in, and build up layers digitally using a Wacom Cintiq tablet — the same process fine artists use in oils or acrylics, with zero photo-manipulation.
